Japan is unusual among large countries: the whole archipelago runs on a single time zone. Japan Standard Time (JST) is nine hours ahead of UTC, and it applies from Wakkanai in northern Hokkaido to Naha in Okinawa, roughly 3,000 km apart. Whatever time it is in Tokyo, it is the same time everywhere else in Japan.

Because the country is wide but the clock is uniform, sunrise in Okinawa can be more than an hour later than in eastern Hokkaidō on the same morning — a quirk Japanese people simply live with.
Japan Does Not Use Daylight Saving Time
Japan Standard Time stays at UTC+9 every day of the year. The country briefly ran daylight saving between 1948 and 1951, during the Allied occupation, and abandoned it as soon as it regained control of its own legislation. Proposals to reintroduce it — most recently ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — have never passed.
This matters when you are working out the gap from abroad: Japan never moves, so any change in the time difference comes entirely from your side of the world switching to or from summer time.

A useful rule of thumb from the United States: when it is 9:00 am in New York, it is 10:00 pm the same evening in Tokyo. Anything scheduled for the American afternoon lands in the middle of the Japanese night.
Reading Japanese Clock Time
Japan writes times in both the 12-hour and 24-hour formats, but the 24-hour clock dominates timetables, television listings and business documents. Two conventions catch visitors out:
- 午前 (gozen) means AM and 午後 (gogo) means PM — and they come before the number, not after: 午後7時 is 7 pm.
- Hours past 24. Bars, cinemas and late-night TV schedules often write 25:00 or 26:00 rather than 1:00 or 2:00, to make clear the listing still belongs to the previous day’s programme.
Dates run largest unit first — year, month, day — so 2026年8月27日 is 27 August 2026.
